I've always heard that labor is the biggest variable in weekly operating costs.
Consider the additional performers on salary for the pre-show portion of the performance, as well as the additional staffing required to orchestrate all those immersive elements; getting the audience into the space in such a specific way, covering their phones, serving food and drinks to the tables, giving out 1000+ free shots of Schnapps every night. Plus the food preparation, and the cost of the food itself -- which is covered by premiums on those tickets, but presumably would still count toward the show's weekly operating cost.
That, plus all the normal costs of running a decent-sized Broadway show, PLUS multiple star salaries (Redmayne's probably being the biggest, but I assume Neuwirth commands a considerable salary too) |
