I really enjoyed BALLROOM when I saw it. Loudon was tremendous, and Vincent Gardenia and Marilyn Cooper were quite good as well. !978-1979 was a great season for well meaning musicals that were flops. Gary William Friedman and Will Holt's PLATINUM; Joseph Stein And Peter Link's beautiful KING OF HEARTS; Strouse/Adams/Gower Champions A BROADWAY MUSICAL; Jerry Herman's THE GRAND TOUR; the sweet revival WHOOPEE!; Mitch Leigh and N Richard Nash;s musical version of DONA FLOR AND HER TWO HUSBANDS with the dreadful title SARAVA; SPOKESONG; Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane's CARMELINA; Clark Gesner's THE UTTER GLORY OF MORRISEY HALL; and RIchard Rodgers' I REMEMBER MAMA. The compensation for all of these talented failures was SWEENEY TODD .
