We Californians aren’t in a drought right now. The one that started in 2020 officially ended this past October. The Emergency Regulation to Prohibit Wasterful Water Use ended in December, as did the restrictions on watering lawns only twice a week (and at specific times).

My kids grew up with almost continuous drought conditions: 1987-1992, 1999-2004, 2006-2009, 2011-2019. This means short showers, low flush toilets, low flow showers, and, um, no flushing when there’s just pee in the toilet.

We’ve never had water rationing, though.

We conserve, of course, because our water bills are structured in tiers. If you go over your recommended level for your household, you pay more. If you are really extravagant, have a leak (oy, don’t ask), or need to do work on the pool that requires draining and refilling, you can bump into the higher tiers. The higher the tier, the more you pay.

Laura in LA, who will never forget the look on the guard’s face at Edinburgh Castle because five Californians were gawking not at Scottish treasures, but a summer rain storm in the courtyard (“Hae ye noo seen rain the now?”)
