Found it hard to take when I saw it at the Taper- with only Nielsen reprising her role, I think- and I find it even harder to take in this archival recording. My memories of seeing and reading Durang as a teen and twenty something are so fond: I howled at SISTER MARY IGNATIUS and TITANIC and so many of the one-acts but in my 40's I found this one painfully unfunny and pointlessly weird. The only part that works for me is the big speech of Vanya's in Act II, probably because it echoes so many of my own inchoate worries and insecurities.

I guess I liked David Hull as Spike, as well.....
