I got first row center mezz on TDF, best seats for this vividly visual production, and noted the empty seats up in the rear.

The play is never less than interesting, but probably suffers from being a kind of Salieri or Higgins story of a sort when the interest in the Mozart/Eliza figure is either waning or subjected to Russia fatigue (and I'm not endorsing such a potentially dangerous mindset, only opining about audience investment). It's difficult for some to imagine an evening built around the fairly unknown figure who unleashed a despotic war criminal, particularly when the outcome is so known. The second act is short on emotional suspense. It may very well turn into a fine Netflix film, benefitting the recreation of the era and literal depiction of Putin's ascension. The play's operatic direction is effective, but adds another layer of at times bombastic artifice that some find disengaging.
