| I saw it with the original cast in January 2023 with low expectations, in fact I almost didn't go because my theatre friends didn't care for the show. But I had one slot left on that trip, and since I like Will Swenson, and also like early Neil Diamond, I decided to go anyway, and was thrilled way beyond expectations! I liked the construct of the "now" Neil in therapy and the "then" Neil playing out the memories. Will Swenson was absolutely perfect, he managed to sound so much like Neil, yet not really imitate him. Turns out Will's dad listened to Neil Diamond all the time as Will was growing up, so I guess Neil's music seeped into his psyche. I absolutely loved that they sang my favorite Neil song (I Am I Said) as the emotional climax of the show, with both "Neils" belting it out at full emotional strength! I was shocked how much I loved this show, and went back for a second round when I returned to NY in April 2023. I sat front row center, and I guess I was smiling and enjoying myself so much that Will noticed, because he threw me his guitar pick, and held my hands during Sweet Caroline. Glad to hear that Will's replacement is also great! |
