WATER FOR ELEPHANTS Last Night

A man falls in love with a woman in an abusive marriage. At the circus. Amidst a lot of acro and animal puppets, they sing. And then everyone sings: “Thank you for choosing the ride!” Some of WATER FOR ELEPHANTS is pretty—the design elements are often impressive—but little of it is interesting. The story is dull and maundering. And the score is nondescript; there’s a lot of it and yet it doesn’t sound like much. This is another show that privileges pageantry over narrative invention, acts over character driven actions. There’s no running away to join the circus when it’s right next door.
