PHILADELPHIA, HERE I COME! Today

Thanks to those here who recommended this. I’ve never seen this early Friel play and this production seemed about as good a rendering of it as possible. It’s a guileless work, which is both a strength and a weakness; it’s plainly tender but structurally somewhat inelegant. In particular, the separation of the central character into public and private personas, into an actual divided self, is a prosaic choice that the play’s honest feeling can’t completely disguise. Still, Friel has been called the Irish Chekhov and you can see why. Everyone here yearns to be at once secure and free. Home is a sanctuary and a hazard. All of the actors mine this ambivalence touchingly and so the play, despite its flaws, resounds.
