Regardless of what you think of her performance, directing her to go very broad is a smart producing decision. The show has played over a year, and most of the Sondheim die-hards have seen it already (or had a chance to see it.) Aaron Tveit is a wonderful singer but he’s not a bass-baritone and also not an extraordinary actor. He’s a good name that would sell tickets but won’t thrill you with his performance (in this role) the way Groban might have. So for the crowd that’s coming to see the show at this point, you want something that will keep excitement and word-of-mouth going. And what Sutton Foster is doing with her performance is exactly that. Like it or not, but it’s been her show since they took over. And as you say, the audience is eating it up, and we know that the box office remained fairly strong.

We may look down on it and mutter something about the further deteriorating standards on broadway, but good for the producers for mounting a challenging show that never made great money on Broadway before, kept the size of the orchestra and cast intact (as if it 1980) and managed to have a respectable run and recoupe.
