I agree with you about the Fanny Brice bio using her comic abilities as essential. However, I thought crawling around on all fours during You are Woman was television humor not Fanny Brice humor. I saw Barbra in the show, and her comic takes to the audience and her use the fan definitely emphasized the humor of the character, but she did not crawl on hands and knees and need to be pulled up by Nick. That seemed something styled on Beanie. Barbra simply turned her head to the audience while in a sexual grasp with Nick and sang, Would a convent Take a Jewish girl rather than telegraph the lyric with a big run downstage left. Just my opinion. I don't disagree with your comment, just disagree with the director's staging.
