I wish I could see Ephraim Sykes as Conrad. As you say, he'd be a good Albert, too.
Maybe it's because I know BYE BYE BIRDIE pretty well that I am more open to less traditional creative choices. You're right that the script isn't built to address it, but that acknowledged truth that Elvis made a fortune singing the stuff he'd heard Chuck Berry and Little Richard perform will be teasingly addressed with a Black Birdie.
Christian Borle reads at best about 40. Not out of the realm of possibility that he'd have a mother in her 60's nagging him to settle down. Dick van Dyke was 36, right? (Didn't Tommy Tune tour with it when he was well into his 50's?) |
