| For what it's worth, nothing in my OP objected to lyric content, certainly not with sociopolitical implications; if anything, I have an ear tuned to relevance, not the opposite. I have listened to four songs, concentrating on "Woman Is," and don't find the score a compelling musicalization of this character. Responses to theater songs are notoriously personal. My reaction to the attenuated bombast - the handwringing seems to go on forever - reminded me of earlier feelings about, say, Wildhorn, to cite a composer from earlier decades who generated similar debate. But give me woke - hey, Ragtime is woke as hell ("Back to Before," a potent feminist revelation never fails to wring tears) - but via a synergy of passion and tuneful expression of the human condition, its ineffable secrets released only through stirring song. From the reviews, it seems my response this piece isn't an outlier. |
